The interaction between cosmic rays and the interplanetary magnetic field were investigated. The interplanetary magnetic field defines a region within the galactic medium just as the geomagnetic field defines a region within the interplanetary medium. Galactic cosmic rays may enter the heliospheric region and an unknown fraction of these manage to reach the Earth through the interplanetary medium. The period of increasing modulation of cosmic rays from 1976 onwards is discussed. The geomagnetic field as a spectrometer for primary cosmic rays is discussed and applied to the latitude surveys in 1975 and of 1976. Features of the coronal magnetic field, the solar wind with interplanetary magnetic field, and the transport of cosmic rays in the interplanetary magnetic field is outlined to relate cosmic ray technology at fixed ground level stations to observations made in outerspace. The recordings are explained as a cosmic ray modulation process.
