Photographs obtained during the 1979-1980 apparition of Mars are used to extract a regression curve for the planet's north polar cap, which was first observed at an areocentric longitude of the sun L(s) of 26 deg, with a cap edge latitude at about 66 deg N. When an L(s) of 57 deg was reached, the cap began to shrink. The cap edge reached 80 deg N at L(s) of 85 deg, and then became almost stationary. While the nearly constant dimension of the north polar cap before midspring appears to be a regular phenomenon, the onset time for cap shrinkage after the temporary stop seems to vary from year to year. Measurements of the permanent cap edge showed an axisymmetric shape in relation to the pole. The cap extends farther to the south for longitudes near zero deg than for those near 180 deg. The permanent cap shape at L(s) of 84-101 deg in 1980 is found to be in agreement with Mariner 9's 1972 L(s) for 97 deg.
