ISIS data for the occurrences of 14 VLF saucers exhibiting attenuation bands related to the proton gyrofrequency were examined for evidence that the saucers were due to upgoing whistler mode waves. The generation/interaction region of the saucers was determined to be situated in the 2300-0100 local time sector between 60-70 deg geomagnetic latitude, with events in lower latitudes associated with higher geomagnetic activity. The assumption that the generation or the interaction region would leave its imprint on the saucers led to the conclusion that the majority of the events propagated down to the ISIS 2 spacecraft. The observed positive slope of the attenuation bands indicated a proton-gyrofrequency increasing with time and which, when combined with the published data on particle precipitation, suggested that downgoing suprathermal electrons are a contributing factor for the saucers.
