The paper presents an analysis of the pitch-angle and energy characteristics of solar cosmic rays in the highly anisotropic event of May 7, 1978. The investigation is based on neutron-monitor data and a numerical solution of the particle-propagation equation. It is shown that, in this event, the generation of protons on the sun and their escape into the interplanetary medium took place over a time period of less than 0.05 h.
