Some aspects of the influence of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere are reviewed. The manner in which the IMF controls magnetospheric processes is demonstrated by a discussion of such phenomena as the merging of the IMF with the geomagnetic field; the polar cap disturbances associated with interplanetary sector polarity; geomagnetic activity and solar wind structure; periodicities in geomagnetic activity; access of solar wind particles to the magnetosphere; the magnetopause boundary; and the interaction of the IMF with the bow shock.
