The energy per particle in pure neutron matter is calculated in lowest order Brueckner theory with the Reid hard core potential and the Mongan nonlocal separable potential. The integral equation method of Brueckner and Gammel is used for the calculation of the K-matrix for the Reid hard core potential. The defect parameter k is less than 0.2 for the Reid hard core potential at ρ = 0.5 fm-3, and stays smaller than 0.1 for the Mongan potential even at ρ = 1.0 fm-3. The results are discussed and compared with those obtained for the Reid soft core potential.
