A series of papers concerned with the origin of main fields and secular changes of the earth and planets is presented, as part of the IAGA transactions of the XVIIIth General Assembly of the IUGG. Consideration is given to investigations of oscillatory flow in the liquid core; coupled motions of the inner core and their possible geomagnetic implications; and to theoretical estimates of westward drift. Among other topics discussed are: ringdown of inertial waves in the spheroidal shell of a rotating fluid; time-dependent electromagnetic core-mantle coupling; and self consistent dynamo models driven by hydromagnetic instabilities. Descriptions of the fine-scale magnetic fields of Jupiter and Saturn, and a general review of geomagnetic evolution are also presented.
