Properties of small compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) perturbations in the presence of viscosities are studied. Background physical variables in static equilibrium are assumed to vary continuously only with radial coordinate in cylindrical geometry. The well-known ideal MHD singularities are removed by viscosities. Features of viscous MHD modes and the viscous diffusive mode conversion process are considered. It is shown that this diffusive mode conversion process can be very effective in the presence of MHD singular layers. A possible mechanism relevant to the observed p-mode absorption by sunspots in the solar atmosphere is suggested. An upper limit for turbulent viscosity is inferred from the observed linewidths of p-modes.
