Data furnished by the studies of Sandage and Tamman (1974, 1975), who obtained a very low value for the Hubble constant, are reexamined. These data suggest that the low value was due to an overestimation of the distances of the most luminous galaxies. That is, the most luminous classes were calibrated as too luminous, and the least luminous galaxies were calibrated as too weak.
