It is hypothesized that the intrinsic energy of a multiple cometary nucleus (MCN) plays the dominant role in the physical behavior of especially active comets. This results from the fact that the relatively low energy of the impact mechanism is capable of sustaining the extremely high level of consumption of solar energy toward the sublimation of cometary matter from the icy-dust cloud into the nuclear region. The intrinsic activity of the MCN gradually decays in the course of its evolution into a system with a collisionless structure. The sudden 'switch-on' of the shock mechanism is associated with the removal of a tail of large clumps around the main mass of the MCN; the most simple reason for this is a powerful tidal effect on the tail. The more complex process of the 'switch-off' of the impact mechanism follows the nontidal division of the main mass of the nucleus.
