The results of theoretical and observational studies of two classes of transient disturbances in the stratosphere are reviewed. The two classes of transient disturbances include extratropical planetary waves and equatorial modes in the tropics. The modal structures of the disturbances are discussed within the framework of a space-time spectrum. Particular consideration is given to a qualitative description of the traveling wave event of January 1979. Some advantages and limitations of satellite and radar observation platforms in the study of transient phenomena are identified.
