Attention is given to problems in the dynamics of the Venus atmosphere. The theory of similitude provides a classification of dynamic and thermal conditions in terms of three criteria. The zonal symmetry of the flow at the level of the clouds suggests that the cause of the movements is the temperature difference between the equator and the poles. If the observed time variations in the zonal circulation are real, they would result in fluctuations in the angular speed of rotation of the planet that are much larger than those of earth or Mars. An elementary theory of near-surface refraction is given which takes into account the present knowledge of the atmospheric boundary layer structure.
