Ground and space observations of the solar corona are reviewed. They reveal a large variety of coronal structures at all levels above the photosphere, essentially due to the presence of magnetic fields. Outer coronal structures such as coronal mass ejections reveal the essential role played by the magnetic field in confining the plasma, driving and accelerating mass motions, and thermally insulating portions of low temperature plasma from the surrounding corona. In the inner corona polarization measurements of the 5303 A line reveal a large scale homogeneous structure of the coronal field. Measurements of the Hanle effect in prominences and high resolution microwave radio maps of intensity and polarization above sunspots appear to be the only means to determine quantitatively the magnetic field vector in selected coronal features.
