Magnetic-field measurements by OGO 5 in the polar cusp have been analyzed in terms of paired, field-aligned current sheets which are associated with strong wave activity. According to the proposed explanation, a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability resulting from ion shear flow produces large-amplitude waves which give rise to the double current sheets. This is an example of a situation in which currents can arise as a consequence of a plasma instability.
