The theory of radiative transfer is considered and questions regarding the attenuation by absorption are investigated. The methods described for the calculation of atmospheric transmittance include the line-by-line method of calculation, band-model calculations, empirical methods using band-model considerations, and multiparameter analytical methods of calculation. Atmospheric parameters are discussed along with limitations in the methods, calculations through paths above sea level, slant-path calculations, and aspects of scattering.
