Because of inhomogeneity between the upper and lower mantle, the flow in the mantle associated with continental drift must be confined to the upper mantle. This restriction makes it unlikely that a layer of fluid heated from below or from within can be the driving mechanism. A more likely mechanism is drift associated with moving heat sources. Lateral inhomogeneity of heat production in crustal matter between oceanic and continental regions is of the correct magnitude to drive the continents apart.
