The paper reviews the chief features regarding variable stars located in the approximately 130 globular clusters in and around the Galaxy. Their position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is studied, and the basic phenomenology of their variability is described. The main variable types in globular clusters are examined separately: RR Lyrae stars, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of all variable stars in globular clusters; the W-Virginis or Population II-Cepheids; the red giant variables; and some rare types such as the RV-Tauri objects and the eruptive types such as Novae and U Geminorum. Some remarks concerning stellar evolution in globular clusters are made.
