The problem of the collisional production of beta meteoroids is reexamined by incorporating the experimental results of Fugiwara et al. (1977). The collisional model yields a flux of fragments supported by the conservation of mass flux, which does not account by far for the observed flux of submicron grains. Particles larger than approximately 100 microns will be destroyed by collisions inside 1 AU, well before they get near the sun. The existence of two independent populations of interplanetary dust grains as proposed by Le Sergeant and Lamy (1978, 1980) appears to be reinforced. In addition, it is suggested that the bulk of submicron grains does not necessary travel in hyperbolic orbits and that beta meteoroids may be a transitory phenomenon of limited importance.
