A theoretical study shows that a region of elevated plasma density near an auroral arc is not only the consequence of the arc but is also a factor that sustains the existence of the arc. Under steady state conditions, the arc and the associated plasma region move at a velocity that differs from the plasma convection velocity. Depending on the orientation of the arc relative to the external electric field, the velocity of the arc is greater or less than the convection velocity. The plasma region is located either ahead or behind the arc.
