A scaled electromagnetic analogue model is used to study the vertical magnetic field response of a large-diameter seamount in a deep ocean. Model results are presented for flat-topped cylindrical seamount models for a range of overburden depths and source field periods. Both in-phase and quadrature responses are observed to undergo reversals in sign, with the quadrature component reversing at the same period at which the long period in-phase response is maximum. The seamount overburden depth, and the field penetration depth in excess of the overburden depth, are found to be important parameters in determining the response characteristics. The model results are also used to provide empirical curves predicting the period for maximum response, the magnitude of the response at this period, and the period for sign reversal as functions of overburden depth for a simulated large-diameter seamount in a deep ocean.
