The short-time variability of the atmospheric tides is examined using a numerical simulation of tide-wave interaction similar to one described by Teitelbaum et al. (1989). It is shown that at least some observations of short-time tidal variability can be explained by the nonlinear interaction between tides and planetary waves whose periods are the same as the periods of the tidal amplitude modulation. Observations carried out above 45 deg N were analyzed, presenting experimental evidence that nonlinear interactions between tides and planetary waves indeed take place in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere.
