The cold excitation of the He II 468.6 nm line in structurally and physically inhomogeneous models of quiescent prominences is examined. Statistical equilibrium equations for levels 2-5 and the continuum are solved along with approximate radiative transfer equations for wavelengths of 30.4, 25.6, 24.3, 23.5 nm and below 22.8 nm. It is shown that the cold excitation of the He II 468.6 nm line is possible only in faint prominences; in bright prominences, this line is excited by electron collisions in the space between filaments at high temperatures.
