When the IMF latitude rotates smoothly from South to North, as in a magnetic cloud, the equatorial geomagnetic field strength is suppressed due to superposition of a westward electric field. The magnetic cloud passage does not influence significantly the dynamo electric field of ionospheric origin at low- and mid-latitudes but alters significantly the polar cap currents.
