A computer algorithm is described which selects large, short-lived magnetic-impulse events from magnetic records. The magnetic records were taken from near-cusp-latitude conjugate stations, and only magnetic fields with vertical components of 50 nT or more lasting 6-12 min are isolated by the computer method. For both stations, the events occur primarily between 06 and 18 LT with notable lows at 11 LT. A half-cycle, odd-mode Alfven wave along a near-magnetopause flux tube generates the events, and the associated vertical magnetic deflections are utilized to determine the directions of field-aligned currents. The currents point into the ionosphere in the morning-LT sector and away from the ionosphere in the afternoon-LT sector. The vertical components's average deflection is about 95 nT and the magnitude of the average field-aligned currents is about 2 x 10 to the -7th A/sq m. The results suggest that Iqualit and South Pole have a higher effective magnetic latitude during the impulse events.
