The decay of an electrostatic upper-hybrid wave into a high-frequency transverse wave and a low-frequency longitudinal wave in an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma is considered. The growth rate and threshold of this parametric instability are calculated. The present results should be suited for the understanding of nonthermal radiation arising in nonuniform plasmas such as those found in the terrestrial magnetosphere as well as in the F-region of the ionosphere.
