The authors present a model of γ-ray burst sources based on repeated Compton scattering of soft photons by relativistic nonthermal electrons. The electrons are continuously produced. A small fraction of the hard radiation of the electrons is absorbed by an optically thick region and reemitted as blackbody radiation, providing the soft photon source in a self-consistent way. Such a situation can occur, for example, when electrons are accelerated at a height of a few tens of kilometers above the optically thick surface of a neutron star. The total spectrum is found analytically, using a kinetic equation in the integral form describing electron injection and scattering processes, and conservation of photons in Compton scatterings.
