Optical spectra and broad-band photometry of the optical counterpart of the southwest radio lobe of the double-lobed radio galaxy 3C 33 are described. The optical emission comes from at least two distinct regions. In the red, most of the flux comes from the hot spot; in the blue, most comes from regions outside the hot spot. The spectrum of the hot spot itself is consistent with optical synchrotron emission with a high frequency turnover from the radio spectrum above 2 x 10 to the 13th Hz and maximum electron energy corresponding to a critical frequency of 10 to the 14th Hz. The features are difficult to explain in terms of either common emission line processes or commonly accepted continuum emission mechanisms.
