A model of intergalactic medium heated by QSOs and cooled by the expansion of the universe and Compton cooling is examined in the framework of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Two important observational facts are taken into account: the X-ray background radiation and the Compton parameter, y, recently measured by the COBE satellite. It is found that both the X-ray background spectrum and the Compton parameter are incompatible with large values (greater than 0.25) of reheating redshifts. Only for reheating redshifts of 0.25 or less, it is possible to have both the X-ray spectrum and y equal to or less than the values measured by the COBE satellite. However, the model of hot intergalactic medium is not thought to be plausible because of the high energies required to heat the intergalactic gas.
