UBV photometry is presented for the symbiotic star AS 296 in outburst. The data are compared with the proposed models for the nature of its outburst. The most remarkable feature, not easily accounted for, is a pronounced increase in the B-V color of the component responsible for the optical brightening, while the ionization degree of the emission line spectrum also increases.
