High-SNR coude spectrograms and uvby light curves of EM Car are presented which have enabled the physical properties of its components to be determined with higher accuracy than that previously obtained for other O-type binaries. The observations reveal a slightly eccentric orbit and the presence of apsidal motion with a period of 42 years. It is suggested that the system is still within the lower to middle part of the main sequence band, at an age of about 4.5-5.0 x 10 to the 6th yr.
