The weighted-slab method is modified so that, although it is still not exact, it gives the 'best' approximation in a minimization sense when energy loss cannot be neglected. In this approximation the species-dependent energy-change term that operates on the path-length distribution is 'averaged' over the slab-model solution for that particular energy and path length.
