THE far-infrared properties of the atmosphere have been studied chiefly in solar absorption measurements from high mountain sites1-3 and aircraft4. Gebbie et al.5 have surveyed the atmospheric emission spectrum from 15 to 60 cm-1 from an aircraft. We report here the first observation from aircraft altitudes of the sky emission spectrum between 5 and 20 cm-1, with an instrumental resolution of ~0.1 cm-1.
