During current studies for Terrestrial Planet Finder, and as part of a collaboration between Lockheed-Martin, MIT and the University of Arizona, a new chopping-nulling configuration using four mirrors was identified. The configuration is a degenerate version of the Laurance Hexagon. Its advantages compared with e.g. the OASES configuration discussed by Angel and Woolf is that this configuration also has chopping, and for the same resolution, its baseline between the outer mirrors is 27.3 % shorter. As compared with the 4-element configuration PDI discussed by Woolf et al. the new configuration offers a fourth power null shape as contrasted with the square for PDI. But for the same angular resolution it is 33 % longer. However, the same optics and spacings can also be used as a double Bracewell interferometer with square power null depth. In this manner, the resolution length becomes 3/4 of the total baseline whereas the PDI resolution length is only 2/3 of the total baseline length. The increased technical difficulties involve production of broadband beamsplitters that separate 1/4 and 3/4 amplitudes, and production of achromatic chopping phases of +/- 1/6 wave.
