The equations of motion are derived for the case of a spinning satellite which has a central rigid body, and long flexible appendages which are nominally in the spin plane. The ‘major-axis theorem’ is found to be necessary, but not sufficient for this case, and appropriate sufficiency criteria are derived from a Liapunov function. The results are presented in a form amenable to satellite design.
