Electron distribution functions measured inside auroral acceleration regions are characterized by a relatively dense population of trapped electrons. The formation of this trapped electron population cannot result from a simple static electric field, and a formation mechanism based on an increase of the parallel electric field along the trajectory of the electrons is proposed. After a first downward acceleration and a reflection due to the converging magnetic field, the magnetospheric electrons lose more energy during their second crossing of the acceleration region than they initially gained. Some of them get trapped in the structure and then form a bump in v-perpendicular in a region of the phase space which would be empty if the electric field was constant. The importance of the trapped population in the generation of the Auroral Kilometric Radiation is discussed. It is also shown that the model can account in a simple way for the formation of electron bidirectional 'conics' often observed near acceleration regions.
