Previous spacecraft observations have established the standard picture of the plasma sheet dynamics during substorm-type magnetotail activities in the wide region of the magnetotail (> ~ -220 Re). However, from the recent GEOTAIL observations there have been raised several mysteries such as, Behaviors of the plasma sheet during the northward IMF (increase of the plasma content, turbulence, etc.) The plasma sheet responses to the impulsive change of the solar wind (shocks, etc.) Quasi-periodic oscillations of the distant neutral line position Origin of cold ions found in the earth's umbra We will review these findings and evaluate their physical significance in the total tail dynamics.
