In this paper we present results from global MHD simulations of magnetic storm periods which are driven with solar wind data from magnetic cloud events. Specifically, we examine the characteristics of ionospheric joule heating and the solar wind variations that drive it. We find that during the period of strong driving, variations in the solar wind kinetic energy flux drive variations in the electrojets and the joule heating. The time delay for the entry of solar wind until it is dissipated is about 20 minutes. We also will present estimates for what fraction of the solar wind energy flux is dissipated in the ionosphere, comparing several events.
