During geomagnetically active times, the ionospheric contribution to the plasma sheet plasma can be significant. After substorm onset, the low energy plasma of ionospheric origin is significantly heated. The CIS CODIF experiments on the CLUSTER satellites measure ion composition over the energy range 20 eV/e to 40 keV/e. During the CLUSTER 2001 tail phase, the CLUSTER satellites were separated by approximately 2000 km. When the plasma sheet thins, the multi-spacecraft measurements allow us in many cases to monitor both the central plasma sheet and regions close to the plasma sheet boundary layer and lobe during a substorm. In this talk we will examine the contribution of O+ to the plasma sheet pressure before and after a substorm injection to determine how the O+ effects the dynamics of the plasma sheet.
