The stability and propagation of low frequency drift magnetosonic waves in the nightside magnetosphere between the outer ring current and the distant neutral line is investigated. These compressional δ B&|slash waves are important for understanding the connection between the two substorm onset mechanisms of (1) the near geosynchronous orbit (NGO) onset and (2) the near Earth neutral line (NENL) mechanism. The NGO data suggests that flux tubes with foot points in the auroral regions may be the first indication of substorm onset through Pi2 precursor oscillations, auroral arc brightening and flux tube convection. A one-dimensional model of the Earthward transport of ions is developed. It is found that due to flow breaking sufficiently steep pressure gradients are formed which can support these precursor oscillations. Here we consider the role of the compressional wave in connecting the dynamical processes occuring between the auroral field lines and the NENL region.
