Field-aligned potential gradients in the auroral region fall into two categories: short-ranged structures, usually double layers, which may arise from current-driven instabilities, and long-ranged potential gradients, which are required for pressure balance in the inhomogeneous magnetic field when the electrons and ions have different velocity space anisotropies. Observational evidence for both short- and long-range potential gradients has been reported. We present a model which attempts to incorporate double layers into a long-range potential by combining Sagdeev pseudopotentials with a Fokker-Planck-Poisson system of equations along a field line. The model is constrained with data from the FAST satellite. The results show that both short- and long-ranged potential gradients coexist on auroral field lines.
