Few years ago, supernova observations have demonstrated their essential role in cosmology, by providing direct evidence for a dark energy component, responsible for the acceleration of the universe. We review how type Ia supernovae are used as distance indicators for cosmological parameter studies, and present the attempts of current surveys to turn pioneering distant supernova discoveries into daily routine, in order to provide a direct measurement of the dark energy equation of state.
