In the last 150 years and more, the variety of human technology that is embedded in space-affected environments has vastly increased. As technologies increase in number and sophistication, subtle aspects of the space environment around Earth often come to be quite important in the design and operations of many technical systems. After a brief historical background to space weather, this tutorial will present an overview of the present-day technologies that can be affected by such solar-terrestrial phenomena as galactic cosmic rays, solar produced electromagnetic and particle emissions, and geomagnetic disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere. Context will be provided for several of the sessions at this meeting that relate to space weather.
