Very Large Telescopes: Extragalactic Objects

Powerful 8 - 10 m telescopes are coming into action and significant results for extragalactic astronomy are expected in view of their high resolution capabilities and great sensitivity. Several examples of research areas of interest are given. A number of desirable characteristics of big facilities are mentioned and are put into perspective with reference to the programme of the European Southern Observatory.
