Molecular Outflows: Bow Shocks, Molecular Outflows: Molecular Hydrogen

Scientific paper

The author analyses observations of molecular hydrogen emission lines in the west lobe of the Cepheus A outflow made with the Infrared Space Observatory. The molecular hydrogen columns are compared to predict for bow shocks employing the sensitive column density ratio method. This yields evidence that (1) the vibrational levels are out of thermal equilibrium, (2) internal extinction strongly influences optical and K-band emission and (3) C-type bow shocks with wide flanks produce the molecular emission. High densities are predicted despite the non-equilibrium state, supporting a fragmenting bow or interacting shell model, with a low inter-shell density.
