To improve simulations of the lower atmosphere, it is possible that the models must also capture the variability of the polar vortex. Planetary waves generated by topography are known to modulate the strength of polar vortex. The dynamics are complicated by eddies in the troposphere. It has been shown that baroclinic eddies act as an internal link between the troposphere and stratosphere in the absence of topography. The topography is more or less an external forcing that can change the strength of the polar vortex. The vortex varies in strength on long time scales because of interactions with planetary waves - global-scale disturbances that rise from the troposphere. In this study, the dynamical link between stratosphere and troposphere under the influence of topography is further investigated..
