An analytical theory is developed for the main instability of collisionless gravitating systems, namely, radial orbit instability. Such instabilities naturally occur during the formation of galaxies in the process of star cloud collapse from the strongly rarefied initial state. In accordance with the theory, the instability occurs when the gravitational potential of the system provides for the precession of orbits with small angular moments in the direction of star rotation along these orbits.
