Calculations were carried out of the motion of electrons in the slow large-amplitude electric-field fluctuations observed by the Swedish satellite Viking. The results show that temporal variations of the E-parallel component of the kind observed by Viking can easily bring the electrons to the top of an acceleration region, which extends 1000-10,000 km along the magnetic field lines, with energies in the range of 100 eV to several keV, as have been observed.
