Comet 1986 Iii Halley, Cometary Comae: Electron Densities
Scientific paper
Coherent radio signals from the spacecraft Vega-1 and Vega-2 were used for radio probing of the envelope of comet Halley. Results from these probings have been used to determine the profile of electron density N(h) in the comet. In both experiments, maximum electron density occurred at distances of about 11.5·103km. The maximum values were about 3600 cm-3 and 1900 cm-3 on March 6 and March 9, 1986, respectively. The larger maximum in the electron density distribution in the cometary plasma can be approximated by the fit N(h) ≡ h-2. A layer with enhanced plasma density is seen at cometocentric distances of about 25 and 40 thousand km.
