Consideration is given to OH emission at 18 cm toward nine RV Tau stars in order to determine the expansion velocities and to check for the probable presence of molecular abundance anomalies in the envelope. The only two published detections, in TX Per and RV Tau, to a significantly better noise level are not confirmed. The only emission peak detected toward RV Tau at 1667 and 1665 MHz is identified as probably interstellar. It is concluded that the earlier determination of high expansion velocities in the envelopes of RV Tau stars based on OH maser emission cannot be considered as reliable and a low expansion velocity is favored for these stars. The nondetection of OH emission and the weak CO emission can be interpreted in terms of a deficiency of molecules in the envelopes of RV Tau stars. Possible evolutionary links between RV Tau stars and other kinds of objects are discussed on the basis of the absence of OH emission.
