Recent advances in particle identification techniques have significantly altered our perception of the role and importance of cosmic rays in astrophysics and geophysics. In this paper we will consider the nature of this revolution in geophysics. Briefly, it is now possible to characterize the irradiation history of terrestrial solids up to depths of several hundreds of meters rock equivalent from the study of interactions in situ due to cosmic ray particles.
